Service Line Inventory
NEW SERVICE LINE MATERIAL INVENTORY PART OF NEW FEDERAL REGULATIONS FOR DRINKING WATER SYSTEMS
DANVILLE, Ky. (October 17, 2024) – This week the City of Danville launched a water service line material inventory alongside utilities nationwide in compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Customers can search the existing inventory for their service address to check if their water service lines are categorized as “non lead”, “lead”, or “unknown” at Danville City Hall located at 445 W. Main Street in Danville, Kentucky. The inventory was created using community records showing most structures built after 1988 to be lead-free.
The City of Danville is in the process of notifying those residents whose service lines remain in the “unknown” category. Customers whose service line materials are unknown can expect to receive a postcard in the mail, as required by law. Not receiving a postcard means your service line material has been verified as non-lead. There is no cost associated with the inventory and no action required at this time. The Water Department will continue to update the inventory and will use methods approved by the state Division of Water to identify the service line materials of homes categorized as unknown.
Why is lead a public health concern?
Lead was once a common material used in water systems and household-owned plumbing fixtures. In 1986, the Safe Drinking Water Act banned the use of lead and in 1988, the EPA created special rules for which construction and plumbing materials were considered "lead-free." To remove legacy lead infrastructure in drinking water systems, the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) now require water utilities to inventory service lines, notify residents when there is a potential presence of lead or galvanized material and plan for the replacement of all lead and galvanized lines.
