Fire hydrants are flow tested twice a year in Danville, and annually in the rest of Boyle County. This is done to flush the water mains, determine available water pressure for firefighting purposes, and identify problems with the system for repair. Testing occurs in the spring and the fall of the year.

Sometimes during fire hydrant testing, people experience a temporary discoloration due to sediment in the water lines. In most cases, running the tap for a minute will resolve the problem. The Fire Department will publish and announce on the radio when hydrant testing occurs, so people can plan ahead and avoid issues with the water discoloration. View more information about hydrant testing.

Prevent Your Pet from Starting Fires
- Extinguish open flames - Pets are generally curious and will investigate cooking appliances, candles, or even a fire in your fireplace. Ensure your pet is not left unattended around an open flame and make sure to thoroughly extinguish any open flame before leaving your home.
- Remove stove knobs - Be sure to remove stove knobs or protect them with covers before leaving the house. According to the National Fire Protection Association, a stove or cooktop is the number one piece of equipment involved in your pet starting a fire.
- Invest in flameless candles - These candles contain a light bulb rather than an open flame and take the danger out of your pet knocking over a candle. Cats are notorious for starting fires when their tails turn over lit candles.
- Beware of water bowls on wooden decks - Do not leave a glass water bowl for your pet outside on a wooden deck. The sun's rays when filtered through the glass and water can actually heat up and ignite the wooden deck beneath it. Choose stainless steel or ceramic bowls instead.
Keep Your Pets Safe
- Keep Pets Near Entrances When Away From Home - Keep collars on pets and leashes at the ready in case firefighters need to rescue your pet. When leaving pets home alone, keep them in areas or rooms near entrances where firefighters can easily find them.
- Secure Young Pets - Especially with young puppies, keep them confined away from potential fire-starting hazards when you are away from home such as in crates or behind baby gates in secure areas.
- Since Pets Left Alone Can't Escape a Burning Home - Consider using monitored smoke detectors which are connected to a monitoring center so emergency responders can be contacted when you're not home. These systems provide an added layer of protection beyond battery-operated smoke alarms.
- Affix a Pet Alert Window Cling - Write down the number of pets inside your house and attach the static cling to a front window. This critical information saves rescuers time when locating their pets. Make sure to update the number of pets listed.
Annual Hydrant Testing & Flushing
5-
Annual Hydrant Testing & Flushing
Testing ensures that hydrants are in full working order and verifies their flow capacity. Someone could also accidentally turn off the fire hydrant water valve and it would not be noticed until it is needed during a fire.
-
Annual Hydrant Testing & Flushing
In order to determine that a fire hydrant is capable of meeting fire flow requirements, Danville Fire Department employees must open the hydrants and discharge water from the hydrant at a very high flow rate.
-
Annual Hydrant Testing & Flushing
The Fire Department tested:
- Flow pressure: Pressure that is flowing
- Residual pressure: Available water pressure that is left over during flow
- Static pressure: Available water pressure
-
Annual Hydrant Testing & Flushing
While fire hydrant testing is a routine maintenance procedure, it may result in temporary inconveniences. High flow rate discharge during testing disturbs sediments in the water distribution system. This often results in brown or rust-colored water. Hydrant testing may also reduce regular water pressure. Reduced water pressure should only be intermittent as the hydrants are being tested. Your regular water pressure will return to normal once the flow testing is complete.
-
Annual Hydrant Testing & Flushing
We recommend that you turn off your taps for 10 to 20 minutes while crews are testing the fire hydrants on your street and do not do laundry during that time. This should allow work crews enough time to complete the test. When work crews have left the area, turn on one of the cold water taps in your home for a few minutes to flush out the system. If you detect brown or rust-colored water, do not drink the water or wash your laundry. While discolored, the water is not harmful.
Solid Waste & Recycling
21-
Solid Waste & Recycling
Single stream (also known as fully commingled) recycling refers to a system in which all paper fibers and containers are mixed together in a collection truck, instead of being sorted into separate commodities (newspaper, cardboard, plastic, glass, etc).
-
Solid Waste & Recycling
Republic Services can be reached at 859-936-0957.
-
Solid Waste & Recycling
It goes to a Municipal Recycling Facility (MRF) - an owned and operated facility by and in the City of Lexington.
-
Solid Waste & Recycling
Everything but shredded paper, it must be in a clear plastic bag. Single Stream Recycling is all about keeping the material loose.
-
Solid Waste & Recycling
When the material is brought into the Municipal Recycling Facility (MRF) trucks dump the material on the floor. The loose shredded paper would be hard to capture, but in bags, the operators can separate and maintain the quality of the product.
-
Solid Waste & Recycling
Oh no, please don’t! But if you must, call Republic Services at 859-936-0957.
-
Solid Waste & Recycling
Republic Services will replace any damaged or lost container. Please contact them at 859-936-0957 to report your issue.

Make sure the container is at least 3 feet from mailboxes, parked cars, trees, light posts, and the handle and lid hinge is facing your residence. Please ensure the lid is closed to prevent damage to cart(s). Place your cart out the night before and do not forget to return your cart to the house when it has been emptied.
-
Solid Waste & Recycling

-
Solid Waste & Recycling
The design of the new containers provides leverage to assist maneuvering. Many residents have found this makes using a cart easier than lifting a filled 18-gallon bin or box of recyclables.
-
Solid Waste & Recycling
Use a brick or rock to hold it down. Allowing water to get into the container can cause the paper to degrade.

Boil Water Advisory
5-
Boil Water Advisory
A Boil Water Advisory is issued as a precautionary measure when there is a POTENTIAL for contamination.
A Boil Water Order is issued when contamination has actually been confirmed in the water system.
-
Boil Water Advisory
The preferred method of treatment is boiling. Boiling water kills harmful bacteria and parasites (freezing will not disinfect water). Bring water to a full rolling boil for 1-2 minutes to kill most infectious organisms. Timing starts when the water starts to bubble. Boiling it longer than 3 minutes may adversely affect water quality and taste. Cool the water then place in clean containers for use.
-
Boil Water Advisory
Yes, if you disinfect dishes and other food contact surfaces by immersing them for at least 1 minute in tap water that contains 1 teaspoon of unscented household bleach per gallon of water. Allow dishes to completely air dry. Most household dishwashers do not reach the proper temperature to sanitize dishes.
Laundry water does not need to be treated, it is safe to wash clothes in tap water.
-
Boil Water Advisory
Unless specifically listed, water may be used for showering, baths, shaving and washing, so long as care is taken not to swallow or allow water in eyes or nose or mouth.
-
Boil Water Advisory
Yes, this is a good idea because many pets can get some of the same diseases as humans and in turn give these diseases to their owners.
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
11-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
Over time, water meters become less accurate and can provide inaccurate readings. By replacing meters, our city will be able to bill more accurately and efficiently for water usage. In addition, the new system will include an automatic meter reading technology that will save labor time, prevent any recording errors, minimize wear and tear on vehicles, minimize the need for the city to go on the private property of residents, and potentially allow leaks to be identified earlier by analysis of data collected.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
Not necessarily. In cases where rates remain consistent, the new meters will simply record consumption more accurately. In some cases, your bill may increase, but only if the current meter is underreporting usage. Presently some residents are paying for the water they are actually using, while other residents are only paying for a fraction of their usage. This condition is not fair to all residents. Discussions have already been held within the Utility Department and the City does not intend to make bills retroactive where under-billing has been noted. The new system will ensure fairness and equality for all the residents and businesses from this point forward.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
The work started the week of January 8, 2018. The entire project will take approximately 8 months. In most cases, the transition will be completely transparent and will not affect the residents. The majority of the work will be performed during normal working hours of 8 am to 5 pm, however, for some customers, it may be necessary to do evening hours.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
A contractor will come to your residence and replace your meter. The meter will be checked to verify that no water is presently in use. If no water is being used the meter will be replaced. There will be interruption of service for approximately 30 minutes during the change, but after that it will be the same great service (and even better) that you've come to expect.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
In most cases, it's a simple procedure that will require about 30 minutes.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
We have contracted with Harshaw Trane and Utility Metering Solutions to conduct this service. They will be driving Utility Metering Solutions trucks, wearing bright yellow/green shirts identified by the "Utility Metering Solutions Meter Replacement Team" and carrying appropriate identification.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
In most cases, it will not be necessary for anyone to be home. The majority of the work will take place near the street in the meter box. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the utility billing department at 859-238-1200.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
In rare instances, the main cut-off valve to your home may be left off. This will occur when the Utility Metering Solutions installation team is not able to pressurize your home following the installation. The normal cause of this condition is when an inside spigot is opened during the installation and subsequently left open. The water is not turned back on to ensure a sink or bath tub does not overflow with the resident not home to turn the water off. In these cases, your water will be left off and a door hanger will be left on your door providing you a point of contact to call to have your water turned back on immediately.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
No, your new meter does not require any maintenance by the homeowner. As before, the City will take care of all maintenance. However, please know that this new meter has transmitting technology on it that allows your meter to be read remotely.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
The contractor will contact you and schedule a time that will be convenient with your operation that will be least impactful upon your operation.
-
Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)
The City is working with Utility Metering Solutions to answer everyone's questions as thoroughly as possible. We have taken the following steps to answer your questions:
- A project overview and updates will be posted on the website for the city and can be found on our AMR page.
- Residents may contact the Water Billing Office at 859-238-1200
