The design team for the Danville Parks Facilities Master Plan shared its initial concepts for four key sites in the city with the City Commissioners on Tuesday, February 1st. Jennie Rogers Elementary School, the location for a new aquatics facility, Michael Smith Park, and the Boyle County Fairground have been identified as the first projects to be studied, building upon the findings of the 2018 Parks Master Plan. Jennie Rogers is envisioned to serve as a community center comprised of civic minded partners to serve the needs of the community. Click here for more information about the development of the Jennie Rogers Community Center.
A potential partnership with the Wellness Center is being explored for the aquatics facility to facilitate a holistic approach for health and wellness.
Three alternative plans to re-energize Michael Smith Park were shared, including an interactive water feature. The team shared a concept of a Cultural Trail Loop that celebrates the rich history of Second Street, the riparian corridor of Clarks Run, and the historic significance of Town Branch. The city and design team will reach out to the community to solicit more feedback on the concepts.
The design team shared the concept of a Millennium Park District that connects the civic assets of Millennium Park, Boyle County High School, and the Boyle County Fairground. The team explored vehicular circulation, pedestrian connectivity, and leveraging exiting structures to create a cohesive composition of proposed uses. The site is envisioned to accommodate a variety of active recreational amenities that complement Millennium Park and the high school campus.
