The City of Danville Municipal Utilities Department would like to ask our customers to refrain from disposing of items and materials into the sanitary sewer system that is not suitable for its processes. Disposing of certain items into the home sanitary sewer system can have negative impacts on the sewer system either in the home itself or in the public collection portion of any sanitary sewer system.
Do flush: Toilet paper and human waste.
Don’t flush: Diapers, Facial/Baby Cleaning Wipes, Fats / Cooking Oil and Grease, Rags/Towels, Feminine Products, Cigarette Butts, Expired Medication, plastics, metal objects, or similar products that may not adequately break down within the sanitary sewer system. Certain products should be properly disposed of into the garbage.
Improper disposal of materials into the public sewer system can cause backups into your home or a neighbor’s home. Or it can cause issues along the rest of the system causing sewer lines to become obstructed and manholes to overflow into the streets or onto the ground. This can cause public health concerns and can negatively impact aquatic life in streams and nearby lakes. Improperly disposed objects and materials into the public sewer system can cause pump station failures and process failures at the local wastewater treatment facility for the City. Such impacts could lead to sewage rate increases to address the rising cost for the City to maintain the public sanitary sewer system due to improper disposals by some customers.
