The City of Danville supports expansion of the Art Center of the Bluegrass

On Friday, February 3, The City of Danville and the Arts Center of the Bluegrass announced plans to expand the Arts Center and establish a National Glass Museum in honor of Stephen R Powell and his contributions to our community.

Mayor JH Atkins says, “This project highlights our art community and the importance of celebrating our glass artists, keeping us connected to the life and legacy of Stephen Powell. I think this also shows we are serious about fulfilling the objectives laid out in the Downtown Masterplan. I’m excited about the economic impact this will have, not only downtown but throughout the entire community. ”

In 2021, The City of Danville approved a Downtown Masterplan meant to "lay out the vision for our town", promote healthy economic growth and support local businesses. As part of the Downtown Masterplan, The City has acquired the historic building at 415 W Main Street which it will lease to the Arts Center of the Bluegrass for the next 100 years.

The Art Center of the Bluegrass plans to begin restoration of the property in the Spring of 2023, which will include updating the building to meet modern safety standards and promote accessibility. In addition to hosting a permanent glass exhibit, the Center will restore the 3rd floor ballroom providing additional space for art education, meetings and community events.
